Scene 1 (Italian transcript by AuntieCallisto)

[the elevator doors opens. Esther finds herself in front of Aldo and looks at him with apprehension]

A: Esther

E: Aldo

A: Actually, I was looking for you.

E: Ah…

A: Listen, we’ve got to talk, Esther.

E: But about what?

A: I can’t do it any longer, Esther. Ever since you’ve left me, I…

E: [annoyed] Oh God… listen, can we talk about this at some other time? – What are you doing, getting on or off?

A: Christmas without you. All these nights on my own… I… darling…

E: [curtly] I know, I know. But let’s talk about it later.

A: You can’t imagine how much I’ve been thinking of you. I know…

E: I know, I know you’ve been thinking about me, but let’s talk about it later…

A: [louder now] I’m the one who ruined everything! But here I am, ready to fall to my knees in front of you! [he drops to his knees]

E: [terribly embarrassed] Aldo! Are you out of your mind?

A: Esther, forgive me, Esther!

[Giulia arrives on the scene with three interns.]

E: [breaking free] No, no… just a moment. Excuse me…!

Scene 2 (Italian transcript by AuntieCallisto)

[Esther and Rocco, taking about Danieli's Christmas lunch]

E: A proer Christmas Lunch, eh?

R: Yes, and much better than the Christmas lunch my mother-in-law made. She prepared… turkey with chestnuts, gurnard soup and spinach. She mixed it all together and I drank it down like tequila, bang bang, off the reel.

E: [with disgust] Just think of your stomach, how gross!

R: Noo, I’ll get over it by Easter. – And your Christmas?

E: In presence of a union worker pouring over the crib.

R:[nodding] Mhmm.

E: Yes, from Christmas evening until the Three Magi, you can’t do anything with my father if it doesn’t include playing with little paper-mâché houses and terracotta shepherds. It’s the highlight of the year, if you will. Really, all I did was get some rest.

R: Great, so other than shepherds and the Three magi, no men?

E: No, just some cousin, nephew or uncle. – Look, after Aldo, I prefer to be on my own for a while.

R: Good for you! – Bye.

E: Bye.

Scene 2 ½ (Italian transcript by AuntieCallisto)

[before Marina walks into the cafeteria, she passes by the reception where Teresa is standing, phone in hand. Teresa is talking with Rocco about a woman who came to see Malosti]

T: Not that I would bar them from anything, mind you!

[Rocco greets Marina, who smiles at him and glances at Teresa without saying anything, although her look says it all.]

R: [smiling] Good day to you!

T: [not smiling at all] Ah yes, hello.

[when Marina walks off, Teresa talks to Rocco]

T: Ha, did you see the Ranieri? Just from the way she walks you can already see that she’s playing for the other team!

R: But you wouldn’t bar anyone from anything, eh? Nooo…

Scene 3 (Italian transcript by BAM)

[The cafeteria. Marina walks up to Esther who is seated at a table.]

M: Hey…

E: Hey.

M: Oh, good Lord… Two hours in the ER and it’s like not having been on vacation at all. I’m more tired than before.

E: Uuh… [she is very distant and cool towards Marina]

M: So what did you do over Christmas in the end?

E: Oh, nothing special.

M: Did you spend it with your father?

E: No, I didn’t spend it with him.

M: [with an expression of astonishment] Have you been with Aldo?

E: Yes.

M: Did you two make up?

E: No, not really. – We just saw each other again.

[Marina drinks her coffee, but it's obvious that this bit of information has annoyed her. Esther looks at her, and then she looks away; she is clearly uncomfortable.]

M: But how can you drink this that hot…

E: Uhm… [she gets up] you finish it, I’ve got to get going.

M: Where are you going?

E: Ehhh… no, no, you finish it. I need to talk to a colleague for a moment.

[at this point, Marina is called to tend to a child]

[Marina and Esther do an operation together]

Scene 5 (Italian transcript by AuntieCallisto)

[Esther and Teresa]

E: Hey…

T: If there isn’t at least one brawler a day coming in, it seems we haven’t even done a real day’s work, you know?

E: Listen, did you have me called?

T: Ah yes. Aldo came by and left this here for you.

E: [without enthusiasm] Ah yes, but what is it?

T: What do I know, I’m not in a habit of unpacking the packages of others.

E: No?

T: No.

E: That’s rare.

T: And why don’t you open it?

E: Well, I thought I could open in later.

T: But why do you want to drag it out now? Come on. Who knows what may be in there…

E: Who knows.

T: Just think about it, from Aldo! It’ll be… it’ll be a pocket calendar with all the heroes of the Milan [soccer club].

[Esther leaves without opening the package; she does it later with Rocco present.]

Scene 6 (Italian transcript by BAM)

[Cafeteria. Marina is seated, Esther walks right by her pretending not to see her.]

M: Esther… there’s still a spot free here.

E: Well, but…. I didn’t want to bother you.

M: You’re not bothering me.

E: Are you sure?

M: Have a seat. [Esther looks very uncomfortable] All right… what’s wrong?

E: Nothing, why?

M: No, because it seems to me… as if ever since we talked about my homosexuality…

[Esther, at the word ‘homosexuality', looks around as if she wants to say "What are you saying? Lower your voice!"]

M: But look, everybody knows about it and…

E: I didn’t tell anybody.

M: I know that you didn’t tell anyone. But trust me, and I’m talking out of experience, it’s enough when one person knows it. Give it two days, and everybody knows it.

E: True…

M: What’s that? [she looks at the gift Aldo has given Esther]

E: Uhm, it’s a gift from Aldo.

M: Can I see it? – Uuh, love poetry [leafing through the book] Well… you got it, Aldo. – I hadn’t pegged him for someone that…

E: …Romantic?

M: Romantic, yes.

E: Neither had I. [she is eating a sandwich meanwhile] He’s back around and says that… that he’s sorry, that he understands all the things that he has done wrong…

M: And you believe him?

E: He’s still a part of my life…

M: And life’s about changes, Esther. [Esther looks at her with surprise] Oh God, don’t look at me with such big eyes. I’m not saying that by changing your life, you have to become like me. You keep misunderstanding me.

E: I’m sorry.

M: Listen… you tell me you’re sorry one more time, and I swear I’ll walk down the street naked, screaming “I love you”  [uhm, Esther? ...Say "I'm sorry" once more? - Sorry, completely unqualified comment of the tired translator after midnight]

[Esther laughs]

M: You’ll see, I’ll do it… just you wait!

[Marina then touches Esther's arm. It's a spontaneous gesture and Esther looks around as if she is afraid what people might think. Then the two end up looking at each other.]

M: You’ve got some breadcrumbs there… [gesturing at her mouth]

Scene 7 (Italian transcript by AuntieCallisto)

[Teresa, Rocco at the reception desk. Aldo shows up with a large bouquet of red roses.]

A: Esther! [he gets down on his knees]

[Teresa laughs]

Esther: [laughing] Aldo, but what’s it with that strange habit you’ve got today with dropping to your knees?

A: [sounding as if her were reading the words of a teleprompter] For love, you suffer. But the more you suffer with all your heart, the stronger it gets.

E: Listen, goofus… Come on, get up, don’t make a fool out of yourself. [she picks him up from the floor]

R: I couldn’t do it that profoundly if I wanted to.

T: Neither could I.

A: For the love of roses, you suffer the thorns.

[Esther is clearly annoyed by now.]

R. All right, that’s not cutting it. You found that one on a box of chocolates.

A: Listen, Rocco, would you please stay out of this?

E: I’m working. And you should be going.

A: I’m not going. Until you have accepted my apologies, I’m not leaving!

E: Aldo, leave!

A: Look, it’s…. the things don’t change. We are the ones who are changing.

E: Enough with the quotes. You’ve been saying them to me all day.

A: My love, allow me to prove to you that I have changed. Everyone deserves a second chance.

T: Well, you should listen to him. He seems to mean it, even.

[at this very moment, Marina is walking by]

A: Eh, did you hear that? Listen to the wise voice of experience!

[Esther can't seem to take her eyes off Marina]

T: No, look… on second thought, you better don’t listen to him because he’s in a state of delirium.
[Esther lowers her eyes]

A: Will you give me another chance?

[At this point, Marina chooses to leave]

E: All right, I’ll grant it. Just so you stop doing this!

[Aldo smiles broadly and kisses Esther, Esther laughs]

R: Uhm, and this one? [he has the roses in his hands]

[Esther, with a smile, points at Teresa. Rocco hands her the flowers.]

R: Is there a vase around?

These translations/descriptions/sneak previews are just an Italian finger exercise of mine and try to cover the core scenes of Marina and Esther, which means that there may be video footage in the clips on YouTube that is not covered here. I do, however, try my best to include everything that is essential, for as long as I have the time and as long as the storyline is not steering into  Barbie Torture or horrid “pregnancy/going back to men” stereotypes. There may be occasional glitches or mistakes – feel free to point them out in the comments.
