Mezzo Stella Doufexis as Hamlet in the World Premiere of Christian Jost’s “Hamlet” opera at Komische Oper Berlin, staged by Andreas Homoki. June 2009
…
The review by Claus Spahn – lauding Doufexis’ portrayal as the best part of the evening – accompanying the photo can be seen in the current edition of German weekly newspaper Die ZEIT (No. 27/2009, S.56).
For another, interesting photo (white shirt and white suit jacket and the attitude to go with it) and some more on Doufexis, albeit German only, check this earlier ZEIT article (June 19th, 2009) by Christine Lemke-Matwey (who has published on trouser roles before and has also written the, in my opinion, most comprehensive and intelligent review on Kasarova’s Carmen debut).
Stella Doufexis’ credit as a trouser role are not a margin topic; she rarely gets classified differently. Another (German, but with photo) interesting proof of that is this pdf article by Kisten Liese. Doufexis, sadly, doesn’t seem to have a website on her own, but the Komische Oper – where Doufexis is under contract – plays the Homoki “Rosenkavalier” again in spring 2010 (three times between March and May). A video teaser can be found here (and it features uniforms, dyke hair, undershirts, swashbuckle sword-fighting and kissing of the soprano/mezzo kind, just as your average “Rosenkavalier” should).

Goodness me, the whole white shirt thing is snowballing. The entire cast be-shirted in Agrippina and now this. Be stealing my starched shirt worshipping heart. Must say I like the white shirt + white suit trend as well. Hell on the dry cleaning bills but works for me.
PS Yes the whole lack of websites thing is getting to be a pain. How on earth do they expect us to maintain our slavish devotion if we can’t find out where they are singing??? Good thing for them we are persistent little obsessives…
I suggest we start a small enterprise – we’ll build your website and (more importantly) keep it updated in return for tickets. “Code for Txs”. I’m sure we could easily drum up a core staff team just from Eyebags alone…
