“La Calisto”, both tubed and live

[all clips thanks to OedipusColoneus]

In case you like your soprano (or mezzo) with another soprano, your tenors in skirts, your queens evil and your counters all in white, search no more for your Thursday evening program.

OedipusColuneus on YouTube is our new best friend since he has uploaded some parts (all embedded below) of the legendary 1995 Bruxelles “La Calisto”, directed by Herbert Wernicke and conducted by René Jacobs. Thank you!

If you don’t melt at the sight and sound of Maria Bayo’s Calisto (un)happily in love with her Diana (clip No. 9!), I am questioning your opera dyke status. While the most recommendable DVD of this gem has been out for a while, these clips offer a glimpse at Baroqueer opera business at its best.

On a side note: the next possibility to catch “La Calisto” live might just be in Geneva in April 2010. Philipp Himelmann directs, Andreas Stoehr conducts, the cast includes Bejun Mehta (Endimione), Anna Kasyan (Calisto) and Christine Rice (Diana). Booking commences as of September 1st – I already have the dates marked (April 13th, 15th,17th, 18th, 20th, 22nd, 24th, 26th and 28th). – Anyone else up for a Cavalli spring meeting at Lake Geneva?

  1. Well that sure sounds like the ideal opportunity to hold the first “Baroqueer Opera Company Fundraising Gathering”… Our motto “Baroqueer or Bust”!

    Christine Rice… fantastic!

  2. Hmm…. Cavalli and Geneva…. sounds a sweet combination… and all with Christine Rice thrown in (I was super impressed by her Arsace in ENO’s Partenope). Pencilling in April as we speak.

  3. This almost makes up for missing Grange Park Opera’s Eliogabalo – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imFcGpCB09s

  4. thanks for posting that link… one production I would have LOVED to see! The world needs more Cavalli, definitely.

(although that ENO Partenope also sounds like a treat…)
