Marina/Esther – sneak preview 1×15 (with video)

[more trouble in... wait, wasn't this supposed to be Paradise?]

Note:

[this sneak preview is a translation of BAM's "on the fly" transcript. It contains the crucial, but not necessarily all Marina/Esther relevant moments of this episode; there will most likely be additions and/or corrections later.  - If you want to quote these translations elsewhere, you are welcome to do so, as long as you link back to this original post and credit the creators (i.e. BAM and Nordica)]

A Spanish version of these transcripts can usually be found at Sam’s blog within hours of my post, a Chinese take on things a few days later over at Lang’s blog, while discussions continues on the Chinese Marina/Esther forum.

Video, thanks to AuntieCallisto, embedded below.

Tonight, RaiDue had the glorious idea to air Terapia yet another half hour later – BAM managed to stay awake and transcribe nonetheless, but really, RaiDue: this airing schedule sucks. We hope they’ll be back to “normal” next week.

Scene 1

[the news that Marina and Esther are a couple has made the rounds through the entire hospital. Everybody talks about it, and most of all Teresa acts very differently around Esther. Giulia, the head nurse, uses every chance she gets to call Esther aside and give her orders, telling her that they really need to talk.]

Scene 2

[Marina is trying to talk to Esther, who in turn is trying to avoid her]

E: What is it, Doctor?

M: Can I talk to you for a moment?

E: No, really not, because I arrived late and now I have to time. [she turns around and starts to walk away. Marina holds her back by her arm.]

M: Listen, I’ve never been abe to stand the silent treatment! Oh, come on – are you actually scared of me?

E: Listen… I don’t want the others to think anything bad, so…

M: The only thing you’re interested in is what the others think or say… isn’t it, Esther?

E: And you, in turn? You’re only interested in what you want. You don’t care about others, not even about me!

M: Ist that so? You’re really unfair. I’ve always tried to be at your every gesture, every word…

E: Lower your voice…

M: Now I’m really fed up.

E: Look, nobody asked you to do anything! You did all that on your own!

M: Ah well, we knew very well that it would be difficult. I’ve done all I can, but if you don’t want to…

E: I want to be left in peace!

Scene 3

[Giulia heaps yet more workload onto Esther.]

Scene 4

[Esther and Rocco have another of their heart-to-hearts, talking about what the others are thinking of Esther, who is very worried about what her colleagues think and say; she’s not prepared for any of it.]

Scene 5

[Marina and Esther]

M: Listen, Esther – I’ve messed it up. I shouldn’t have given you that kiss, I was wrong.

E: I’m glad you admit that. Because my life has turned into hell…. and it’s all your fault.

M: I don’t deserve that.

E: But I deserve what is happening to me, or do I? Teresa won’t even look me in the eye, Giulia thinks I don’t know how to do my job, and they’ll probably fire me!

M: Oh, stop it. You know that’s not possible.

E: [very cold, and very mad] Is it? And how would you know that?

M: Listen, Esther, what do you want me to do? Do you want me to put up a sign out here that reads “The lesbian, that’s me. Esther has nothing to do with it!”?! I’ve already lived through this whole story before. And you know what? It’s better if we end this right here.

E: I didn’t say that!

M: I’m saying it!

[Marina walks away, Esther tries to hold her back]

E: Wait…

M: Better don’t touch me –  somebody could think that there is something going on between us… and that, in fact, is not the case. [she walks away]

Scene  6

[Hospital director Sergio himself is offering Esther the job of being the head nurse and furthermore says that he never had any intention of firing her. Esther is very happy about that.]

Scene 7

[Marina, before going home after shift, asks Sergio for a day off, which he grants her.]

Scene 8

[a reluctant Teresa, whom Rocco has given a good talking-to, tells Esther that everyone is going for coffee together after shift, and she asks her whether she’d like to join them. Esther is very happy about that.]

Preview for 1×16:

they seem to have killed the previews -  nothing, again!

Although I’d say the ball is squarely in Esther’s court. Marina apologized for the forced kiss and made a  clean cut, so Esther now has time to realize that 1) she misses Marina badly, 2) that the others don’t matter that much, at all 3) that her life doesn’t come to an end over coming out (actually, it starts!) and 4) that she should apologize in return and grovel, grovel, grovel. Preferably in public.

Sadly, this scenario might not be as realistic as today’s episode.

Still, there are three more episodes to go. If even Terry can speak to a presumed lesbian in the end, Esther should be able to exchange more than zingers with Marina!

This sneak preview has been made possible thanks to the Italian transcripts by BAM (you rock, girl!). Header screenshot made possible by an episode trailer uploaded by mary_iena. English translation: mine.

These translations/descriptions/sneak previews are just an Italian finger exercise of mine and try to cover the core scenes of Marina and Esther, which means that there may be video footage in the clips on YouTube that is not covered here. I do, however, try my best to include everything that is essential. There may be occasional glitches or mistakes – feel free to point them out in the comments.

  1. Thanks Nordie and BAM. Translation into spanish asap. You rock girls!

  2. The clue was when Marina said it was over and Esther said it wasn’t. Plus E is finding out that all of her fears are unfounded. She was not fired – rather promoted, and Terry obviously doesn’t hate her. Now Marina will disappear for a bit and Esther will realize how much she misses her just in time for a happily-ever-after-end-of-series-reunion.

  3. Danke Schöne, Anik!

This ep seems the turning point to me, Esther is coming around to it. Good. Grovel she will, just wait……….. :D

  4. Marina is a very smart woman.
Giulia should get some sense bitch-slapped into her.
Terry is a good person after all — I’m relieved because I love her character!
And now I’m going to have a cigarette, because the pressure is becoming a bit much.

  5. Oops, nevermind, just saw AuntieCallisto’s video. I retract what I said about Giulia. I didn’t pick up on the harmlessness when reading the above-posted.

  6. @Amoledonne: had to make our darling Giulia look bad there for a moment to give Esther’s fear a better context! The surprise at the unfoundedness had to be palpable.

For me, Esther’s “I didn’t says that” looks like the first shade of lighter gray on the momentarily dark horizon – more than the promotion and the invitation by Terry, that both happened after Marina broke up with her.

That said, I can still understand Esther’s sensation of being overwhelmed and desperate – if you don’t have Marina’s sense of self and have always tried to make amends with everyone (well, perhaps with the exception of Marina), some bouts of paranoia are to be expected. Coming out is a big deal more times than it isn’t, and I’d say that in particular for the Italian context.

That said, the “I didn’t say that” will hopefully be the turning point for Esther.

  7. Nordie, you’ve said it! Just a word: Rocco is the best! :-) HE is the worshipped HC Teresita character for me.

  8. I hope so, too, Anik.

As for Terry, I realize that her act of inviting Esther to coffee does not indicate as much as I’d like it to, as obviously it required a considerable amount of encouragement from Rocco (again, amazing guy!!!), but I’m pleasantly surprised nonetheless. Judging from the video, it almost looks like Terry is not so upset by the fact that Esther is gay, as she is by the fact that she is left to find out with the rest of the hospital staff, as opposed to Rocco, who knows from day one. I think that the my-now-gay-friend-never-told-me-she’s-gay situation can be very confusing and somewhat hurtful to Terry (or anyone, for that matter), as it indicates a lack of trust. But that’s just my take on it… I could be completely off, because I actually don’t understand about 90% of the dialogue in the series. Speaking of which, Anik (or anyone else), do you know what it is that Rocco says to Terry from 2:00 to about 2:25 that makes her look so shocked?

  9. unfortunately,i can’t see the new episode55555

  10. BAM and Nordica
    Thanks, thanks and thanks!!

  11. @Amoledonne: Rocco is my hero! As Sam said, he’s the TdU Teresita.

As to what he says to Teresa from 2:00 onwards:
he asks her why she is acting so differently around Esther over the Marina thing.
Teresa says she acts like always.
Rocco says “oh yeah, right, you always shunned and ignored her before…”
Terry here already looks a little guilt-stricken.
Rocco adds “You know what I think, Terry? I think you’re envious. Envious of those who are happy, because you are not.”

Good call about the “feeling rejected because my friend came out to someone (or everyone) else first” – I hadn’t thought about that. Terry may have that in addition to the homophobia. (makes me remember the second time I ever came out to someone, which was a good friend who was exactly that kind of mad at not having been told first…)

Over at the Chinese board, sadcat has posted another portrait graphic (high awww level) and also a new comic, which has me evoke Lang’s translation skills once more (only if you have the time, dear!). – Thanks for your work, sadcat! Always appreciated.

  12. Thanks, Anik. I kind of thought that Rocco pointed out some personal issue/flaw of Terry’s, but wanted to make sure.

The portrait is adorable, as is the comic, though Esther is looking a bit crazy, despite the offered chocolate (?). Ah, three episodes left. Let’s hope she gets her act together and doesn’t go completely nuts and paranoid.

  13. Here it is:
    http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c279/r3712512/ME06-2.jpg

    Grid 1
M: Come on, it’s better to have a chocolate.
    E: No I don’t want it.

    Grid 2
    M: It’ll make you better.
    E: All right

    Grid 3
    M: Esther!
    E: Let…go…

    Grid 4
    E: I, Ohhhhhhhhhh!!!

    Grid 5
E: Da la la la la…
    M: It can’t be.
(on the chocolate wrapper): whisky heart chocolate

  14. Ha! I was right. Chocolate, and not just any chocolate apparently.

  15. @Lang: thank you very much for translating! Hm, if it would be that easy for Esther to get addicted to chocolate as a Marina replacement? Let’s hope not…

  16. My pleasure.
Re Esther getting high so easily (just on chocolate), I sure hope not :J

  17. I love marina and esther…
    Brazil

  18. Hey I had a dream last nite. After her nite shift as she was leaving the hosp in the morning Esther called Marina (after finding out that Marina took the day off). Marina didnt answer. Esther went straight to Marina’s apartment. (Somewhat like the Maca-Esther scene when Esther brought flowers to apologise to Maca). Esther apologised to Marina for being paranoic. And they made up, and.. made out. The next day they went to hospital TOGETHER. Yeah!!! Can one really have such dreams? I think I’m highly obsessed. Wat am I gonna do when the season ends?? Help Anik!

    bette

  19. @bette1985: let’s hope your dreams have some premonition quality! ;-) After the show ends, I guess there will be fan fiction (depending on the outcome of the last episode).
Then, I should also finally find the time to do the screenshot editions of all ten new episodes, so that might tide you over another dozen weeks or so, but after that… oh dear, what ever shall we do?!

  20. Hope that your dream is the real thing that will happen between marina & esther. I love them. They’re really nice together ( eventhough Esther is sometimes very negative ) I think that loving Marina is her only cure to become a positive person.
