Black Coat Wednesday

Sarah Connolly as Nerone exemplifying how each and every one of us would most likely look (including the death grip on the armrest) if Miah Persson’s Poppea were to sit down next to us on the couch in that white nightshirt of sorts.  Is “White Nightshirt” a category on its own? – Rational thought leaving the house in 3,2,1…

  1. Were you reading my mind, Anik? The last two days I’d been playing this Vaghe perle in loop…girl in white gay guy in black…:D

    • …only to be topped by girl in white, girl in black! ;-)

thanks for the link, Lang! And let me add here in the unsuspecting comments that redprriest, the friendly clip uploader, also has more or less the full B.rtoli S.crificium movie online, to make the wait for the DVD release a little shorter!

      • Of course, girl in white and girl in black a sure-win, at least to me :)
Thanks for making this a link in stead of a video insert, I meant to do that but did not work out how.

  2. “The death grip”! Ha ha ha ha, Anik you bad.
I’ve taken my hand back from the armreast, …no you didn’t see!

  3. I am eagerly waiting for this Poppea to come out on DVD it was due to be released this year. Have you heard anything on the grape vine?

    • waiting right along with you, PL! Just checked back to make sure, but nothing on the grapevine yet. At least not on my vines, perhaps Vita or someone else has more luck and good news for you.

      • Well, I don’t know much about the Barcelona production…. (it was a great radio broadcast but I was personally hooked on Maite Beaumont playing Ottavia rather than the Connolly/Persson interaction – but seeing some photos…. hmm… ) but there is a production of Poppea with Alice Coote and Danielle De Niese on DVD that is awesome – http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=222175 – more white shirt action than you can shake stick at.

  4. Oh my goodness Ms C looks quite undone! But understandable with Ms P asbout to pounce :) Great photo Anik thanks!!

  5. Damn though! That shoulda been Kasarova coming over all queer on that nice red sofa :(

  6. Now,now Purity let somebody else have a chance, this Black Coat is mine and I’m going to savour her for all I’m worth!!

  7. Thank You xx !!

  8. Hm, wasn’t Kate Aldrich wearing that coat, too? During B nights?

@Vita: oh yes, that night was all about Beaumont for me, too. Electrifying!

  9. More Kate Aldrich in a black army coat: http://www.deutscheoperberlin.de/?page=spielplandetail&id_event_cluster=436368 click on “Weitere Bilder”

  10. thanks, Octavian! black army coat AND boots!

(though the aesthetic is so heavy on the brown&ugly that I feel I’d have to pay photo rights to Riefenstahl upon reposting…)

  11. Thanks Vita, I have seen the A.Coote video and I agree it’s great, it is just that I’m a great Sarah Connolly fan and I want to see what she does with it (or should that be what she does in!!!)

  12. She was wonderful as was Miah Persson. Not a production I like though.

  13. Thank You Mary for the comment, you must have been one of the lucky ones to see the performance , I’m sure the singers made up for your disappointment with the production.

  14. They certainly did. Maite Beaumont was good as well. Still waiting for that DVD. Can anyone get a reply from Lice? I can’t.

  15. Sarah Connolly opens tomorrow night at the Met in Ariadne auf Naxos! you don’t happen to have a link there do you?!! I’d love to know how she gets on

    • it doesn’t seem to be in the broadcast line-up and I haven’t really seen any pre-coverage, either. Perhaps parterre will pick it up tomorrow?

  16. I just came back from the MET Ariadne auf Naxos. Sarah Connolly was a passionate Komponist.

  17. I saw it too yesterday (Thursday); Sarah Connolly’s singing and acting were excellent I thought – such a shame the character only appears in the Prologue! Nina Stemme as Ariadne sounded and looked fantastic. Unfortunately the scheduled tenor was ill, and the raplacement had a cold which badly affected his voice. Too bad. Incidentally, it was a “Green Coat Thursday”. Green velvet to be precise, and a white shirt of course (with untied cravat).

  18. The Saturday matinee performance of Ariadne auf Naxos on 20 February will be broadcast live on the Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 1 pm ET.

    • Thanks for the alert, Vita! — is that the Sirius pay channel? Either way, I think PL now has plans for the 20th! :-)

  19. Sirius will be broadcasting it and also the live performance on Monday 8 February at 8 pm ET, but the broadcast I was referring to is the public worldwide broadcast which can be picked up on various stations such as BBC Radio 3 which also do live streaming.

  20. Sorry I wasn’t clear – BBC Radio 3 will only broadcast the Ariadne “Live from the MET” matinee broadcast on the 20th; Sirius will carry two performances, those on the 8th and on the 20th.

    • thanks again, Avis – that explains why I couldn’t find what I was looking for on Radio 3. I will change the alert to the 20th.
