Friday Night Conversation: New Year’s Resolutions
High-flaring, dazzling, brilliant and energetic creative outbursts of 2011, here we come. I hope.
…
Another year that went by (and it went by quickly, at least to me) – time for the really important questions: What’s for dinner tonight? Do you make New Year’s resolutions? And if so, do you manage to uphold them?
Is there anything that stood out for you in 2010, musically or otherwise? Highlights in queer or subtext-friendly TV? Favorite White Shirt? Stuff that you really don’t want to see again in 2011?
What are your wishes and hopes for 2011, and for your fellow Friday Nighters, White Shirt Bloggers, fiction readers and unsuspecting passersby?
…

For dinner tonight: seared scallops. And a Reserva 2000. And burning sparklers at midnight. Other than that, I hope to be awake again for the Neujahrskonzert (there will be a livestream, 11.15 a.m. (GMT+1), though it may once more carry geographical limits: http://musik.zdf.de/ZDFde/inhalt/19/0,1872,7159283_idDispatch:10226552,00.html?dr=1).
My subtext-friendly TV highlight of 2010: Rizzoli & Isles. How long until next summer? Recent opera highlight (staging-wise): Tobias Kratzer’s “Rosenkavalier” for Theater Bremen. Musically: the Vienna “Alcina”. – White Shirts: impossible to pick just one.
For 2011, I hope to find time for a new story. And a job. Wait, that should be in reverse order…
To you dear readers, a year of health and happiness, with many personal successes and plenty of reasons for laughter. I especially wish for NO MORE geographical IP limitations when it comes to livestreams and broadcasts! Also, more online opera broadcasts (see 2010′s “Capuleti” from Liège), please!
I just want to wish everyone a Happy New Year that will be filled with Peace, Love Joy and Hope! For me dinner will be Pot Luck and there will be champagne at midnight. Lots to celebrate and lots to reflect on. My only resolution is to be happy and spread the joy and to not let silly things bother me!
It was a good year musically for me and I hope to continue that.
Anik, a new story would be great….when you get the job you can start the story.
Happy New Year, everyone!
rock out with the music, terry! happy new year!
Thanks, Nondramafly I sure will rock out with the music!
Happy New Year, everyone! We’ve still several hours to go in suddenly frigid Denver (single digit temps and snow…we needed the snow, but the below 0 cold, notsomuch).
I wrote about the year on my blog today, covering most of Anik’s points above. White Shirts was definitely one of the highlights.
Couple of things I didn’t mention there but will here:
Highlight: Discovering fanfiction. Hello, whole new world, especially J7 (Campus!); I may be late to the J7 party, but people are STILL writing stories about them, which says something.
What I’d like not to see again: the continuing resurgence of white patriarchal supremacy in all its ugliness in the US (or anywhere else for that matter). Sadly, I think it shall get worse before it gets better; on the other hand, perhaps this is its death struggle, and the beast unmasked easier to confront…
Which reminds me how thankful I am to have found the white shirt world and its consistent reminders that there is indeed beauty in the world — beautiful women singing beautifully to beautiful women — and this fun little community of white shirt lovers who hang out hereabouts.
Beat wishes to all of you in 2011, and may you have more than enough beauty to balance out (and then some) that which is not.
oh, to be able to discover J/7 all over again! I envy you.
And yes, the fact that it is still such a strong fandom pairing, even almost a decade after being aired (fine, the reruns don’t hurt…), really showcases its impact.
New Year Greetings to all.
I ate a British bacon buttie whilst watching a community firework display.
Notable discoveries in 2010 – blogging, Handel operas, Kasarova, brownbread icecream, WS women with wise words, Cwmyoy church, renewed optimism … not necessarily in that order.
Happy New Year!

Hum, resolutions?
Uhhh…
love the art, Rain, as always!
still waiting on the resolutions
I resolve to.. uh.
I resolve to evoke the 5th amendment to avoid incriminating myself. LOL
But seriously, I am afraid I did not make any. Bad bad me!
Why isint my userpic showing up???
Of course, now it does show up, so I look like (even more of) a lunatic.
Happy New Year to one and all.
I’ve given up on resolutions, they always fall by the wayside in the end.
My WS moment this year, seeing Sarah Connnolly for the first time, that will remain with me for a long time.
I look forward to another year of happy chatter with you good ladies. Love To All.
Happy New Year, all!
Dinner last night: one slightly unspectacular attempt at a bechamel sauce with mushrooms (my first) over ravioli with butternut squash (not homemade), baked asparagus, caipirinhas (homemade with thanks to Ambassador Selma’s cooking class).
New Year’s resolutions? Not usually my thing, however: from an Yi Jing hexagram: what to do when good things happen? what to do when bad things happen? come back to center. yep, something I’m working on.
Musically, what stood out for me in 2010 was all the discoveries made through this very blog, thanks to Anik, Selma, Yvonne (especially through the good graces of her last.fm account), and everyone here. Thank you for all you have added to my life, musically and in so many other profound ways.
For all of us, I wish continuing joy, exploration, health, kindness, and (hopefully gentle) lessons from the universe to become whoever we were born to be (if such a thing exists).
@ Nondramafly,
Ohhh, I am soooo glad to know you liked it!!! And learned it!!
But, if you still have some cachaca at home , on cold nights in winter time it is delicious to drink pure cachaca mixed with honey.
I swear, it is DELICIOUS..
I would try it, if I were you…
And let me know if it was worth it or not…
Hummmm.
kisses and lots of hugs
Selma
Well I fell asleep so I did not get to see the new year come, but I had a normal day. Not much was different than other days. I had to work so I guess it was a good thing I fell asleep. I have not seen the ball drop for the new year in many years because of so many reasons. Even if I had stayed awake I would not have seen it because I do not have a way to watch it. I had a dinner today with the family that watches my daughter while I am at work.
This past year I have made new friends not only from talking to you all on here but also with my job. I was able to have a good year that really has no need of complaints. All issues I had a not worth complaining over.
For the new year I can not really think of a resolution. I just hope that I am able to get through just I have this one without huge predicaments.
I will have to finish later. Time to put my sleepy one to bed and I am exhausted as well.
So I hope that you all had a great night and an amazing year as well.
@ Hello, everybody,
New Years Eve was celebrated in our land in the countryside. Summer, the night was warm an the sky was simply full of stars.
A miracle happened: I prepared and baked pork’s ribs. It was employed garlic, onion, lime, dry white wine and salt for seasoner. The baking process took place after about 16 hours of preparation.
Considering that I like to talk about food, that I have a passion to share about Brazilian food, I seldom cook, I dont like to cook.
But I like to eat
The baked ribs resulted tasteful and smoothy, thanks God…
According to our tradition, on New Years Eve we dress preferably white clothing. Yellow, green, blue and red colors are also very welcome. But we never dress black clothing, as there is a belief black color does not result in good vibes for the new year. Therefore I was dressing white, my always favorite color for this specific purpose.
And when the matter is Brazil, you people that know me also knows that I like to wear the Ambassador outfit for the latest news.
So now you know that today, for the first time in our history, a woman has started to run this warm country in South America.
Ms. Dilma Rousseff was elected on last November. I have to confess I havent elected her, not because she is a woman, of course not. But because she represents a party I am not aligned with.
But elections are supposed to represent majority. And, since it was our people’s willingness, I do wish she makes her best for my lovely country.
I hope the readers keep posting on this delightful blog. I won’t promise, but I will try ….
Lots of loveeeeeeee…
kisses
Selma
Sounds like a grand way to spend the New Year. I spent the new year keeping my dog from having a nervous breakdown, so many fireworks here.
mmm, those ribs sound wonderful!
happy new year to all of you!
resolutions – not to make any and just see how it goes. go with the flow – worked out so wonderfully last year for me
my wish for all of us: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfWPDGWP568&feature=related

happy new years everyone! i spend the early part of new year with 2 sisters and their 3 little kids watching the Rose Parade (a tradition here in Pasadena), then headed over to family gathering with tons of yummi vietnamese food and company. new year resolution: same as it has been for the last 14 years: live happy. white shirt moment in 2010: definitely Alcina in Wien. non white shirt moment: a few actually: got a new position, got a paper out, befriended with someone i respected greatly in the field. my wish for 2011: more white shirt excursions, streams, a job for Anik so we can resume the fun here in this space
A wonderful Nrw Year to you all, and like everyone else, special good wishes and thoughts to Anik that 2011 results in the letters after the name and the job she so richly deserves!
New Year resolution? Same as ever – carpe diem.
Have a great one folks.
