[Sir Antonio Pappano (back then, still without the “Sir”) conducting the Ride of the Valkyries at the 2005 Proms, starring Lisa Gasteen as
Tarzania Brünnhilde, Waltraud “I have no idea how I ended up here but I’ll cling to my poise” Meier as Sieglinde and Iréne Theorin (Helmwige), Geraldine McGreevy (Gerhilde), Elaine McKrill (Ortlinde), Claire Powell (Waltraude), Sarah Castle (Siegrune), Clare Shearer (Grimgerde), Elizabeth Sikora (Rossweisse) and Rebecca de Pont Davies (Schwertleite)]
…because you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen this particular camp fun mash-up of Method Acting and Evening Gowns, and this particular entrance (you have to know how to make one!) by Lisa Gasteen. And Waltraud Meier, but Waltraud Meier always knows how to make an entrance. She used to be a mezzo, after all.
I know the clip is a little dated already and the quality is quite on the sketchy side, but it’s still worthwhile. It’s better (and more colorful) than any Pride March, too. And where else do you get ten mezzos and sopranos (and, arguably, contraltos, depending on the valkyrie casting) in one place at the top of their lungs?
May we all find that much sheer power in us to face the challenges of 2012, and may we be equally enthusiastic and undeterrable when it comes to the things and the people and the music we love. – I bet’s it’s going to be quite a ride.
