White Shirt Madness: Bonus Sifare Caps

also: hands --- I had rather hear you chide than this man woo

Sweet youth, I pray you, chide a year together:
I had rather hear you chide than this man woo
(and if you were to put those hands on me,
that – spoke Aspasia – would be welcome, too)

[In the words of Phoebe, in the year of the Bard: no, apparently I am still not over the Paris “Mitridate” or its Sifare. And I really needed a palette cleanser after that utterly underwhelming “Alcina”. Here, have some more screencaps. – Myrtò Papatanasiu (Sifare) in Mozart’s “Mitridate”, Paris 2016]

Also, I just learned that Petibon and Papatanasiu have done Aspasia and Sifare together before, staged in 2009 by Robert Carsen at Theater An Der Wien. There are stills here, but I find the Paris production more appealing.

gun control

[I will always advocate gun control. Unless it concerns the opera stage. – Myrtò Papatanasiu (Sifare) in Mozart’s “Mitridate”, Paris 2016]

[That awkward situation when the Governor tells you to make up with your brother, but both you and your brother want to make out with your father’s fiancée instead. – Cyrille Dubois (Marzio), Christophe Dumaux (Farnace), Jael Azzaretti (Arbate), Myrtò Papatanasiu (Sifare) in Mozart’s “Mitridate”, Paris 2016.]

purchè lasciam le donne - lasciam le donne? Pazzo!

[“Okay, fine, I’ll help you out of this mess, but you’ve got to stay away from the princess.” – “I can’t hear you.”
I am getting “Don Giovanni” ideas here: “Purchè lasciam le donne.”  – “Lasciar le donne? Pazza!”
Just imagine a “Don Giovanni” with Azzaretti as grouchy Lady Leoprello. – Jael Azzaretti (Arbate), Myrtò Papatanasiu (Sifare) in Mozart’s “Mitridate”, Paris 2016.]

[The Brooding Brothers. Not a menswear line, but it could be. All credit to Caroline de Vivaise for the fabulous costumes, particularly The Shirt! And don’t pretend you don’t know exactly which one I am talking about. – Cyrille Dubois (Marzio), Christophe Dumaux (Farnace), Myrtò Papatanasiu (Sifare) and Jael Azzaretti (Arbate) in Mozart’s “Mitridate”, Paris 2016.]

    1. Bartoli has goofed around with it, if I remember correctly, and there was one staging forum in 2000 where the idea was also up for presentation.

      1. and here I am, “Mitridate” running in one window, grading essays in a second – I could work faster without it, but speed really isn’t everything.

    1. Yes, that one is definitely a favorite. Actually, let me see if I can get that angle in the HD version for a future WSM or for this year’s 12 White Shirts of Christmas.

Oh, we should pick up the night cap tradition again (since we are apparently still not anywhere near over this). Will be there tonight!
