Liveblogging: Handel’s “Ariodante” from Aix (2014) on Saturday

[“How about I make you a cup of espresso first, and then we can talk?” (I know it’s a door, but I would take that espresso!) – Sonia Prina (Polinesso) in Handel’s “Ariodante”, Aix-en-Provence 2014]

Welcome to the 2017 Liveblog Season! We’re beginning this upcoming Saturday, January 7th, at the customary hour of 9 p.m. (UTC+1), with the 2014 Aix-en-Provence production of “Ariodante” (which has, since then, toured copiously and was most recently done with Coote and Abrahamyan in Toronto).

The evening has something for every range: Patricia Petibon as Ginevra (because ‘Petibon whenever possible’), Sarah Conolly as Ariodante, and Sonia Prina as Polinesso. And Sandrine Piau as Dalinda!

The production is not currently on YT, as far as I can see, but I have a YT copy saved away – just let me know if you’d need an upload.

    1. But is it the Aix version, or the retake with Fritsch instead of Petibon? And yes, let’s share the links offline. We must protect the Magic Channel!

          1. I’m pretty sure the DNO (Fritsch) version exists only as audio and the company’s own archival video.

Dang! I really wish I could join this loveblog and explore my extremely complicated reaction to Polinesso especially. I don’t know my schedule yet but I’m likely to be busy at the theatre in the afternoon (EST). Enjoy!

            1. Too bad, it would have been great to have you along again (but yes – theatre hours…). I’m guessing it won’t be our last Ariodante, though!

            1. i have some version of rinaldo… let me check.. mine came in 3 parts, all intact, total size 650MB, we r set. i can share that offline as well next week!
(am so looking forward to our first event!!! indeed we should compile a list. I think VK should be on there, Orphée? Ruggiero? Sesto? Romeo? Oktavian? Ariodante? Helène!!! (<– i reallly love her portrayal there, it was the one i finally realize how great she was in acting, and the voice…) )

            2. Great, if you upload it to share, can you send me the link as well? I’ve bought the DVD just to show my appreciation (and get the extras) but that would spare me the ripping (doesn’t work a the moment at my system).
Sure, I’m in favour of VK on our list! I still get this strange “mocking” sensation with her, possibly because she is just so efficient it’s nearly ridiculous, more stuff for our proposal.

            3. Definitely Sesto, but we need to coordinate with dehggi. And I’d be down for Hélène, too! And all the list… ah, good thing the year has only just started. 🙂

    1. that should go on the list too! and i heard it’s just been released on dvd.
on the subject of JDD, might you be tempted to hear her Ariodante at Carnegie on 30/apr? 🙂

      1. I got the Carnegie Hall schedule in the mail today and made the mistake of looking at it. Yes I am sorely tempted, whether I will be able to is another question. Also basically the whole rest of the Serenissima program, including that Poppea.

        1. ja, i know which Poppea you’re talking about :-). but i won’t make it, a meeting in San Diego instead… but i’m really looking forward to Vivaldi.. perhaps we can chat about Ariodante when i’m there? (hope it’s not sold out.. right now it looks like only tix in the nosebleed left)

            1. this was how i got introduces to L’incoronazione di Poppea! the pairing of Mingardo (in army outfits with a bouquet of roses ❤ ) and Invernizzi. Then *six* months later i showed up at a concert touting i now "expert" at knowing the music, and promptly fell out of my chair w D.Hansen… and discovered "oh, there is another pair, Nerone?! who's that!!"

      2. This will be the year where White Shirts around the globe will form a line along the entire length of JDD’s Ariodante tour – the 2017 Handelthon.

    2. Oh, what a lovely place to be.
At least of JDD there are at least 4 different takes documented in HD, while Kasarova… *sigh*….

          1. ohhh, so we should organize to go to one of her recital together, then meet with her backstage and you can casually say hi and i can casually mention i “discover” her via VK’s portrait and how we have corresponded before because (now i pull out my tube channel with her image occupying 1/2 of the avartar) of the image related to Bastille footage and we can casually ask her for footage 😉

            1. Singers usually don’t have this, unless they’ve managed to finagle it out of an house employee. But saluting Claycomb should be independent of that 😉

  1. anyway, i’m debating about tomorrow, we’ve been snowed in for days and may need to get out. or, it may still be 0 degrees (F) here and we’ll be bundled up with the cat. might i have a clue to the magic link of whatever one chooses, in case warmth prevails over a store run?

    1. Oh, 0ºF ! we’ve just reached below 0ºC here and have been *ordered* by the city to keep the water dripped on *all* faucets, as well as apartment complex *ordering* us to keep heater on above 68ºF. i’m assuming they put their pipes underground with no backups except “we’ll turn the heater on to keep the pipes warm” when it hits freezing..
I’m sending you the link now on email. Would be great you could join us tomorrow!
